Solons probe OWWA funds

THE Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) says it welcomes the proposal of Valenzuela City Rep. Rex Gatchalian for an investigation into the alleged mismanagement of the Welfare Fund of overseas Filipino workers. OWWA administrator Marianito Roque said in a statement that they will not block the pursuit of transparency and accountability in connection with the status of the OFW fund which is generated from the $25 membership fees paid by overseas workers every two years. Roque had earlier denied allegations of irregularities made by Gatchalian, saying they have consistently come out with their financial records in the last five years. Gatchalian, vice chair of the House committee on OFWs, moved last month for an oversight investigation on the OWWA funds following complaints from migrant workers regarding difficulty in claiming benefits.
