More Fun in Berlin

The Philippine Department of Tourism is debuting its new tourism campaign at the annual International Turismus Bourse in Berlin, Germany.

Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez led a 41-member Philippine delegation for the initial launch of the new tourism slogan, “It’s More Fun in the Philippines,” at, of all places, the “Felix Disco Club” in Berlin. This is where Filipino talents will entertain invited guests. It will also have a booth in the Bourse.

It’s aim, Jimenez said, is to achieve DOT’s goal of 10 million visitors by 2016. He said Berlin was chosen because it would serve as venue for the Philippine delegates to establish and renew linkages with their industry counterparts in Europe and other source markets.

But travel agencies in the United States, particularly those owned by Filipino Americans, are wondering why it’s being launched in a Disco joint in Berlin, Germany instead of the United States where the bulk of tourists to the Philippines come from.

Every year, DOT reports that the majority of tourists to the Philippines come from Asia, the United States and Canada.

The Philippines should therefore broaden its campaign in these areas because many tourists still do not know about Boracay, Palawan, Bohol or other scenic spots in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

It’s better to concentrate first on Asia and the Americas because Europe is in the throes of an economic crisis. Besides, there is the problem of translating the slogan into French, German, Italian, Russian, Polish, etc.”
