Let’s not deny kids their mother tongue

THE PHILIPPINES has more than 170 languages, making it the 10th most linguistically diverse country in the world. The claim is that because we have many languages, we think only on the basis of our own parochial interests and that makes it difficult for us to be united. Ironically, while many of our countrymen bemoan linguistic diversity, the rest of the world extols and praises it. To them, linguistic diversity and multilingualism are very good things that should be promoted and encouraged. To impart knowledge, one has to communicate that knowledge in a certain medium or language. This is why language is a very important factor in learning and consequently to any sustainability effort.
