Students Raise Awareness of the Dangers of Carbon Monoxide

Fairfax County students attending the Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning class at Edison Academy in Alexandria, Virginia are reaching out to their community to raise awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. In June Mr. Robert Stringham, the HVAC teacher, obtained a grant for $10,000 through a partnership between Lowes Corporation and Skills USA for the purpose of informing the community of the dangers of CO poisoning and to distribute CO detectors to those in need.

On Saturday, October 27th students will be at Lowes in Woodbridge, Virginia for a check presentation ceremony and will conduct four workshops from 10:00 am until noon. The first workshop will begin immediately after the ceremony and the others will follow at 10:30 am, 11:00 am and 11:30 am. Students will inform Lowes customers of the dangers of CO poisoning from household appliances and generators. Students will also demonstrate how to properly install a CO detector and will have CO detectors to give to the first 100 people attending the workshop. Carbon monoxide kills at least 500 people every year and sends 50,000 more to hospital emergency rooms for treatment. Come and learn more.

Students have been busy conducting workshops for parents at back-to-school night, Edison High Schools PTSA, Fairfax County guidance counselors, Edison High School staff and attendees at the Virginia State Fair. More than 100 CO detectors were distributed to the attendees of these workshops. Other workshops are planned for elementary schools and Rotary clubs. Public service announcements are also planned on local radio stations.
