The Philippine ambassador to Myanmar, Noel Claudio Cabrera, died in Manila April 8 of a brief but undisclosed illness, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). He was 64, and survived by his wife Cecilia and four daughters.
Before Yangon, Cabrera also served as Ambassador to Romania, with non-resident accreditation to Moldova and Bulgaria. He “represented and served his country and people with competence and distinction,†said DFA spokesperson Eduardo Malaya. “DFA Secretary Alberto G. Romulo and the men and women of the foreign service convey their deepest condolences and prayers to Cecilia and the family of Ambassador Cabrera.†A native of Taal, Batangas, Cabrera graduated from the University of the Philippines with an AB Journalism degree in 1969. He was editor-in-chief and chief operating officer of the prestigious but now-defunct Manila Chronicle before joining the government service as press secretary of President Arroyo.
