ZOOMING IN 11/16/2009 Economists tell us that at this stage in the Philippine economy’s development consumption accounts for two thirds of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP). That being the case, any attempt to forecast the economy’s performance in 2010 must of necessity be based on a reasonably accurate reading of consumer expectations for the 12-month period that will begin seven weeks from now. As an aid to its monetary policy making operations — particularly those relating to the money supply, interest rates and credit flows — the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) tracks, on a quarterly basis, the trend of Filipino consumer expectations.
