Female workers will be entitled to a one-day menstrual leave every month under a bill filed by Rep. Narciso Santiago of the Alliance for Rural Concerns. Employers will be required to grant those on menstrual leave at least 50 percent of their salary during their absence, Santiago said in his House
Bill 4888. “Unlike in South Korea, Japan, Indonesia and Taiwan, there is no law in the Philippines that allows female employees not to report for work due to premenstrual or menstrual tension,” he said. Santiago’s bill seeks to penalize violators with imprisonment of 30 days to six months and a fine of at least P30,000 or both. Santiago said every female worker suffers irritation and bad feeling during the menstrual period, thus the need to take a one-day rest.
