Pacquiao to carry RP flag in Beijing Olympics

July 16, 2008

pacquiao-gma.jpgBoxing star Manny Pacquiao will carry the Philippine flag at the opening of the Beijing Olympic Games in August. The Philippine Olympic Committee headed by POC president Jose Cojuangco has acceded to President Arroyo’s request to make Pacquiao the flag bearer instead of multi-titled Southeast Asian Games swimmer Miguel Molina who was earlier named to be the bearer. Meanwhile, boxing experts say that after his victory over Mexican American David Diaz at Mandalay Bay casino last month, Pacquiao deserves to be crowned as the unofficial best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. Pacquiao himself doesn’t care about that particular title. At the same time Pacquiao has started counting his seven-digit earnings for his victory over Diaz. Previous reports said it will be in the vicinity of $5 million or approximately P225 million. He has a guaranteed purse of around $3 million plus a share of the pay-per-view sales. Pacquiao returned home early this month with his wife Jinkee and some friends. At a press conference, he said he would donate P3 million to victims of typhoon Frank and initiate a calamity fund drive. Before going to Malacanang to pay a courtesy call on Arroyo, the Pacquiao entourage attended a first Friday Mass at Quiapo church, creating heavy traffic as fans tried to get a glimpse of the first Filipino to win the world lightweight diadem.

It was a lousy decision by GMA and the POC. All the other countries had present or former Olympians carrying their flag. Pacquiao has not been and never will be an Olympian. This is sending the wrong message to our athletes - You are not good enough and popular enough to deserve the honor to carry our flag. As usual, Philippines sports is mixed up with politics. No wonder we haven’t won a medal for so long.
