Villar richest senator, Trillanes is poorest

mannyvillar.jpgMANILA - Senate President Manuel Villar Jr. is now a billionaire and remains the richest in the Senate while detained Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV is the poorest.
In the senator’s statement of assets and liabilities for this year, Villar’s net worth grew to P1,041,383,946, with no liabilities, from the P921.4 million that he declared in 2007.

Villar is famous for his rags-to-riches story. He likes describing himself as a poor “shrimp vendor” who made good selling affordable houses to the Filipino people.

He runs real estate and other businesses and has been in Forbes Asia’s richest Filipinos. Ranking next to Villar is Sen. Jamby Madrigal, who was a far second with a net worth of P146,483,524 from P148.9 million last year. She declared total assets of P153,846,138 with P7,362,614 liabilities. Madrigal, who comes from an old-rich family, is currently fighting for her inheritance from a late billionaire aunt, Chito Madrigal Collantes.

Trillanes, the jailed leader of the Magdalo group that launched a mutiny in 2003, reported a net worth of P2.6 million without liabilities, up from P2.3 million last year. This made him the poorest among all 23 millionaire senators.
Among the neophyte senators, Juan Miguel Zubiri is still richest but his net worth dropped from P43.3 million to P22.859 million. He reported his assets as P50,118,463 with liabilities of P27,259,212. Zubiri, scion of a rich family from Mindanao, is no longer in the Top 10 of the richest senators with the decrease in his declared net worth.

Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., a popular movie actor, is now third richest with P117.968 million from P107 million, dislodging Sen. Manuel Roxas II, who is in fourth place with P110.634 million from P140.3 million. His declared assets amounted to P172,337,885 with P61,703,806 in liabilities. Roxas is from the wealthy Araneta clan who owns a prime property in Cubao, Quezon City, the Araneta Center.

Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile is the fifth wealthiest, with a net worth of
P98,840,037, almost the same as last year.
The other five senators in the Top 10 richest list are: Sen. Miriam
Defensor-Santiago, P89,386,749 from P76 million; Sen. Jose ‘Jinggoy’
Estrada, P83,154,561. 78, almost the same from P83 million; Sen. Pia
Cayetano, P76.397 million from P76.2 million; Sen. Loren Legarda,
P45,990,565 from P41.4 million and Sen. Edgardo Angara, P44,104,
977.47 from P41 million.
The rest of the senators and their net worth were Rodolfo Biazon,
P28.192 million from P27.4 million; Panfilo Lacson P27.280 million
from P25.8 million and Richard Gordon P26,521,834 from P25.6 million.

Senate Majority Leader Francis Pangilinan’s net worth dropped to P12.978 million from P15.4 million while Senators Gregorio Honasan declared his net worth at P12.154 million, almost the same at P12 million; Lito Lapid, P12.095 million from P11.6 million; Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr., P11,533.496 from P10.3 million; and Sen. Joker Arroyo, P11.05 million from P11 million.
Neophyte senator Alan Peter Cayetano had a net worth of P16.238
million from P16 million; Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, P13.94
million from P13.3 million; and Francis Joseph Escudero, P7.469
million from P7.4 million.
