GMA retaliating for TV attacks
June 8, 2008
Family patriarch Oscar Lopez speaking before stockholders of the Lopez flagship First Philippine Holding Corp. said May 19, the ‘assault’ on his family was partly in reprisal for “the dogged determination shown by ABS-CBN in its crusade to expose the truth of our every day lives, the good, as well as the rotten.” ABS-CBN, which is controlled by the Lopezes, has frequently criticized the government, particularly the involvement of the Arroyos in scandals. The latest revelation is of pictures showing President Arroyo and her husband, Mike, playing golf in China, courtesy of the ZTE corporation which inked the aborted $329-million National Broadband Contract with the Philippines. The pictures and new witnesses have prompted the Senate to resume its investigation into the deal. The attack on Meralco’s power rates have been waged by the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), Malacanang, the Energy Regulatory Commission, GMA supporters in the House and Senate and private groups all charging that the company was illegally raising its rates to consumers.
