Nelia Holgado, the Filipino maid stricken with cancer, who sought the aid of the Filipino American community so she can get a ticket to return home to die in her native land in January, passed away on April 11, 2008, according to Migrant Heritage Commission (MHC). An MHC press release said she died more than two months after she returned to Metro Manila to be with her family. MHC said “It is with deep sadness that we announce the demise of Nelia Holgado, our cancer-stricken kababayan who sought the help of the community.” MHC said her family conveyed their sincerest gratitude to the Filipino American community for being instrumental in granting her last wish to spend her final days with her family in Manila. “Maraming maraming salamat sa lahat ng mga tumulong kay Nelia Holgado. Let us all pray for her eternal rest.”

The group also announced that another worker, Susan Panlaqui, 60, who migrated to the US in 2002, is stricken with a final stage of liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma)and seeks the help of the community so like Holgado, she can return to die in the Philippines. The MHC says Susan, who is now under the care of the Manor Care Nursing Home in Fairfax, Virginia, has declined to be moved to a hospice and opted to return home to die.

The community held a fundraising dinner-dance April 20, organized by the Fil-Am Ministry of St. Michael, MHC and El Shaddai. MHC it raised $1,385 for Ms Panlaqui. The Valera law office pledged to donate her plane ticket. “HARMONY” Live Band performed for free. MHC says donations may still be mailed to MHC at Mosby Tower, 10560 Main St., Suite 519, Fairfax, Va 22030.
