The Department of Foreign Affairs has warned forgers not to tamper with the new
machine-readable passports (MRPs)saying that immigration authorities are equipped with special tools to easily detect fake or tampered passports. It said the new machine-readable passports are tamper-resistant and fully compliant with the standards and requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO),” it added.

Because of the security features installed in the 44-page maroon MRPs, the DFA said it recorded a “marked decrease” in passport fraud cases since the new passports were first issued in June last year. Among the security features of the new passport are watermarked paper and colored fibers; ultraviolet-reactive inks; a combination of security prints, such as fine lines with modulation, guilloche design, art screen
and dash effects and microtext, laser-perforated alpha-numeric serial numbers; security laminates that are ultra thin with strong adhesion to prevent chemical, thermal or mechanical forgery; high-level origination and high image definition; high security animated and color switch optical imaging, and nano imaging.
