WASHINGTON – Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA), the new chairman of the committee on foreign affairs has assured the Philippines that he will discuss with the House leadership the equity bill for Filipino World War II veterans. Berman (D, 28th Dist-CA) made the assurance to Ambassador to Washington Willy Gaa who called on him at his office in the US Congress late last month.

Berman will be taking over the foreign affairs committee from Rep. Tom Lantos, who passed away last month. Gaa said Berman remains a strong supporter of equity for Filipino World War II veterans.

Even with this expressions of support, the fate of the veterans’ equity bill appears bleak. Because it has no constituency, observers said, none among the reelectionist congressmen would dare bring it to the floor for debate at a time when the US is on the brink of a recession.
