Riches and shortages

By J.G. Azarcon Esq.I was driving one morning last week listening to radio news and here comes your favorite Senator Hillary Clinton lamenting the fact that Wall street executives are earning millions more than the hardworking teachers and other professionals.
If it is so scandalous for corporate executives to earn millions while most of us have to work nine to five to pay for health insurance, what do you make of the former first couple Bill and Hillary Clinton making $108 million in just ten years after leaving the White House? To Sen. Clinton, it is shameful to be super rich, unless you are a Clinton.
I do not fault people wallowing in riches provided they earned their keep honestly.
That’s what free enterprise is all about. Your service is worth as much as what somebody else is willing to pay. Would you rather have the government set mandatory guidelines on wages? I think they are doing it in Cuba where there is no big disparity in income among citizens. If you are happy with less so that your neighbor may have more, give up your house and your car and your Starbucks coffee and try living in Havana. You will
appreciate how it is to live among equals, among those who have nothing.

There’s rice shortage in the Philippines. If you are sending a balikbayan
The government says that population growth is outpacing the growth in rice production. I read a news item that even some bishops are now willing to discuss the poverty issue as it relates to overpopulation.
Finally the church is starting to come down to earth. Poverty cannot be solved by prayer alone. Condoms will not
increase the supply of rice, but at least it can reduce the demand. It can even prevent the birth of babies to secret fathers who look like priests and thus save the church from the expense of paying hush money.

As you all know, the Olympics this year will be hosted by China. The Olympic torch relay is now going through some tough hurdles thrown by protesters angry at the heavy handed ways that the Chinese are employing to suppress defiance by citizens of Tibet. In Paris and in London, the torch had to be carried on a bus to avoid violent protesters.
The protesters are fighting for the civil liberties and human rights of Tibetans. There was once a man named Saddam Hussain who employed brutal force and intimidation to perpetuate himself in power at the expense of the civil liberties and human rights of Iraqis. I do not remember any group in the west rioting to protest the suppression of freedom.
If you really want to punish the Chinese for their perceived transgressions in Tibet, do not inject politics into sports. Do not ruin the dreams of individual athletes. Do something that will really hurt Beijing- stop buying Made In China.

While Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama are still clawing each other in the Democratic primary, presumptive republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain is quietly sorting out his potential Vice Presidential running mate.
Here is an interesting poll recently released by WNBC-Marist Poll among voters in the State of New York. If McCain were to choose Secretary of State Condi Rice as his running mate in the Republican ticket, the GOP team would beat the so-called dream ticket of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. With Clinton at the top of the Democratic ticket, the McCain-Rice ticket would win 49% to 46%. With Obama leading the Democratic ticket, the GOP tandem would win $49% to 44%. A McCain-Lieberman ticket would lose to Clinton-Obama or Obama-Clinton. There you go. The survey tells us that Rice is a palatable candidate.
