Roach not happy over performance

pacquiao-title.jpgLAS VEGAS - Trainer Freddie Roach was not 100 percent happy with Manny Pacquiaos latest performance. For his performance, I give him a seven (on a scale of 1 to 10) because I know he can do better and you know what, his footwork really upset me because he kept on moving into the right hand and we talked about it and we knew what would happen if we move that way and he let it happen, said Roach a couple of hours after Pacquiao carved out a 12-round split decision.

The seven is a far cry from the perfect ten that Roach gave when Pacquiao demolished Erik Morales in their rubber match in Nov. 2006. Pacquiao had two genuine chances of knocking Marquez out.

The first was in the third round when Pacquiao sent the Mexican on his back after landing a vicious overhand left to the jaw, and the second was in the 10th stanza when the same left hand sent Marquez reeling like a skid row drunk. On both occasions, Pacquiao unleashed a flurry but each time, he could not come up with another big shot that kept Marquez on his feet.

Roach, who trained Pacquiao eight solid weeks, lamented that we trained to get away from (Marquezs) right hand and he (Pacquiao) was in one direction only and that was into the right hand and that made it successful for him (Marquez).”

“The right hook was not available tonight and I guess Marquez had a lot to do with that,” added Roach, who was assisted in the cornerwork by Eric Brown, cutman Joe Chavez and Filipino training assistant Buboy Fernandez.

Team Pacquiao had boasted that the Filipino southpaw had not only developed his right hand but had almost perfected it through constant practice at the Wild Card in Hollywood-but against the crafty Marquez, Pacquiao was again a one-armed bomber.

Pacquiao had banked on his new-found weapon in the right hand when he first clashed and whipped Mexican toughie Hector Velazquez in Sept. 2005 in Los Angeles and showcased it even more in the last two fights with Morales.

It was Pacquiaos second straight win on points after fashioning out a unanimous decision over Marco Antonio Barrera last October also at the Mandalay Bay.
