malubay.jpgHOLLYWOOD Filipino-American Ramiel Malubay March 6 made it to the top 12 American Idol finalists after garnering a chunk of the more than 36 million votes that were cast.

It was no mean feat for a Filipino American girl from Florida with a small physique but with a great voice. But bloggers give her an 8-1 chance of ever becoming this years American Idol.

Malubay started strong in her first performance during the elimination round when she impressed judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell with her rendition of You Dont Have to Say You Love Me by Dusty Springfield. Her next two performances were not as strong with the judges, however.

Malubay has been receiving tremendous support from the large Filipino community in the U.S., including Guam.
Even in the Philippines, Malubay is gradually acquiring a number of very appreciative fans. She was featured in the newscast of major TV and radio programs and articles had been written about her in mainstream newspapers when she made the final 24 hopefuls. No doubt, media coverage of her will intensify as she continues competing on American Idol.
Having obtained enough votes from all over the US, Ramiele was declared as safe when the selection of the 12 - six girls and six boys was made on March 6.

Gambling 911.com, an internet outfit which gives Ramiele an 8-1 chance of winning this years crown, says she is the latest contestant that has been caught up in an early scandal that is yet to really gain legs among mainstream media outlets.
It said reports have surfaced that the young Filipino American appears in photos being sent across the Net that show her breasts being groped by other females, hence, the act by some is being dubbed as an American Idol lesbian scandal”.
Gambling911.com, however, while deeming the photo as inappropriate does not see reason for one photo to result in her elimination from the show, especially after a much larger scandal broke out last year with American Idol contestant Antonella Barba appearing in a collection of shock sex-driven photos.

They could just be adjusting her bra, points out Payton OBrien, Senior Editor of Gambling911.com. Most of us -even the Hollier than Thou Payton OBrien - have appeared in at least one photo that could come back to haunt me if say I wanted to enter a career in politics.”

Filipino Americans and supporters of Ramiele are hoping that she will remain in the top 16 after the second round of elimination March 12. She survived the first elimination round last week.

In week one of the elimination round, Ramieles magic voice was not present, yet despite the critical comments from the judges, she survived that round.

She sang Thelma Houstons Dont Leave Me This Way, only managed to register an ?OK” from Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, a far-cry from last weeks stand out performance that unanimously wowed the judges.
This was a little rough for me because I really thought you were really good last week. This was really just OK for me vocally. You can really sing but the song choice for me is weird,” said Jackson.

Cowell panned Ramieles performance having heard of the song so many times at ghastly weddings and stuff like that while she wasnt able to give anything new to it.

I thought you were much, much better last week. I thought you showed more personality, I thought you stood out more. This was one of those performances which Im not gonna remember so well,” said Cowell as he was hounded by boos from the audience.

However, Ramiele was visibly surprised when Cowell added: I think Youre terrific. I think youre one of the top three best singers in the competition. It just wasnt one of your best.”

Ramiele admitted later on that she had to change songs from the 70s list four times as she tried to veer away from the ballads that she had been widely praised for in her past performances.

People would have started calling me lullaby instead of Malubay I heard,” Ramiele told Idol host Ryan Seacrest on why she opted to go disco on her song choice.

Ramiele was the fourth to perform in the 70s-themed round of eliminations. She was preceded by Carly Smithson, Syesha Mercado and Brooke White and was followed by Kristy Lee Cook, Amanda Overmyer, Alaina Whitaker, Alexandrea Lushington, Kady Malloy and Asiah Epperson. Before her top 20 performance, Ramiele revealed on Idol that she had been dancing Polynesian and Filipino cultural dances for 12 years. You might see me dancing on stage if I do a fast song. Maybe, said Ramiele.
