Doctor’s last ditch efforts

February 22, 2008

NEW YORK Dr. Pedro Servano and his wife, Salvacion, of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania who is facing deportation has won the support of Filipino American leaders with the formation of a group known as Save the Servanos: The American Dream.

The formation was announced when the Servanos paid a courtesy call on Consul General Cecilia Rebong at the Philippine consulate here recently. Rebong assured the Servanos of her continued support but added her power to do so is limited. Originally slated for deportation last month, the Department of Homeland Security allowed them to stay in the US for an indefinite period while their lawyers pursue both legal and political means to find a way out of their dilemma.

The couple, both originally from Naga city, Camarines Sur, were ordered deported because of defects in their martial status when they applied for immigration to the US. In their application for a green card, they indicated they were single when shortly before the approval of their visas they got married. They failed to change their martial status. This defect was discovered when they applied for naturalization in 1991.

After lengthy appeals, they were ordered deported on Oct. 23, 2007. Their four children, who were all born here, are American citizens. The community in Pennsylvania rallied to their cause and is seeking the help of Sen. Arlen Specter to file a special law to let them remain in the US. The Save the Servanos group is cosponsored by NaFFAA PA, the Philippine Executive Council of Greater Philadelphia and several Filipino American organizations.
