Another Year is Over

Head Strike By Rene C. CalandriaWe always have a list of our new years resolution every year but sometimes we forget to re-evaluate our previous commitments. While it is important to forgo and let go of the past, it is equally indispensable to re-assess the present and the direction of our future. While the All-Knowing Creator as the architect of our life, we are the builders and engineers. In the process of building our lives, the foundation of our future depends heavily on the quality of materials we used and how far did we follow the specifics of that plan.

As the Filipino mantra puts it, Kung ano ang itinanim ay siyang aanihin. We will only reap what we have sown. It is significant that we understand this dictum because this explains the entire theory of the law of Karma. The gastro-intestinal philosophers used to say it, You are what you eat.

As we look back the year 2007, we need not go farther but ourselves. What have we done and what have we accomplished during the past year? Are we going through the right direction in terms of our health, emotional, physical and financial plans?

The theory of Karma mandates that whatever good or bad deeds we have done today have an equivalent reward or punishment in the future. If we have cultivated dishonesty and have taken advantage of others then the bad karma will either strike on us in the future or on our children in the form of financial or physical misfortune.

When we raised and fed our children through dishonest business transactions and despicable work ethics then dont be surprised to see our children fail in their career and marriage life. If we have nurtured drugs, alcohol and sex in our younger years then dont expect our children to be angels and saints. An apple tree bears no mango fruits. Lifes experience proves it that when we have sexually dishonored women then one of our daughters or granddaughters will most probably screw up her sexual life.

These are just among the experiential and phenomenological realities that we see either in our own lives or in the lives of our friends and neighbors. The theory of Karma is not a myth-creation of our Filipino ancestors but a philosophical tenet rooted in the teachings of Indian thought.

Another year is just unfolding and 2007 should not only be a thing of the past but our experiences should serve as morals for what comes ahead. Our failures during the previous year should guide our future decisions in the years to come so that we may not repeat the mistakes of the past.

Rather, carry-on the lessons of history. If we did some good investments in our relationships with family and friends then 2008 will be a year full of friendships and close affinity with members of the family. If we did not follow a good diet and exercise during the previous year then dont expect a perfect and healthful new year. (You are what you eat). When our diet is full of sugar, logically we dont expect a lung cancer but diabetes. When a sound financial planning has been observed during the last fiscal year then we deserve a good vacation and trip during the summer.

The question is not about the long lists of dos and donts for year 2008 but a personal discipline and commitment in order to reverse the Karma of Life. Its one thing to make some plans for the coming year but its another to execute those plans. Planning and execution are complimentary words but are entirely distinct ideas.
