President Arroyo has ordered the release of P1 billion to create six more Army battalions, a new Marine battalion, and 25 companies of militiamen to better fight rebels and terrorists.
The President issued the order at a command conference in Camp Aguinaldo, where she received the recommendations of Armed Forces Chief Hermogenes Esperon Jr. We need to beef up the strength of the military so we can finally deliver our goal of crushing the New Peoples Army by 2010 and protecting our country from terrorist groups,” Esperon said in an interview after the closed-door meeting.
The current strength of the Armed Forces is about 168,000, made up of 130,000 in the Army, 22,000 in the Navy and the Marines, and 16,000 in the Air Force.
