SAN DIEGO Because they stuck together to the end, 14 Filipino housekeepers have won their fight against the mighty US navy. After they agreed to set aside their labor complaint against the navy for something that amounted to racial discrimination and worker abuse, the navy in exchange gave them permanent status after their two-year probationary status thus guaranteeing their job tenure and clearing their records.

One member of the group opted to leave and to receive a modest monetary compensation. The 13 remained as permanent housekeepers in Navy-owned and managed lodges and inns in San Diego. They walked out last year after their supervisors berated them for repeatedly complaining about working conditions and told them to go home.

They did. The navy threatened to arrest them and they countered by seeking the help of Rep. Bob Filner and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. EEOC took up their case. Its very unusual for people (like the housekeepers) without union to do what they did, a supporter said, adding You took on a hard employer. The Navy is used to tell people what to do and have it their way. I salute you all for your courage.
