US Ambassador Kristie Kenney said during a visit to Isabela recently that convicted Lance Corporal Daniel Smith is not getting special treatment. Smith has been detained in a secluded place within the US embassy compound in Manila since he was convicted of rape by a Philippine court for raping a Filipina in the former Subic Naval Base a year ago during his visit here, Kenney said. She belied allegations that Smith is getting special treatment, saying he is kept in a detention cell.
Kenney said Smith would definitely spend Christmas and New Year in his prison cell, since the appeal over his conviction for raping Suzette Nicolas a.k.a. Nicole, is still pending before the Court of Appeals.
She said Smiths parents and other relatives have been calling the embassy to monitor his health.
