Experience matters

Presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton vowed never to attack a fellow Democrat. That was when the other Democrat candidates were ganging up on her at a time when she seemed out of everyones reach.
Now that Sen. Barak Hussain Obama has grabbed the lead or evened up the primary race in Iowa and New Hampshire, the Clinton vow was broken by Clinton, Bill that is. The knight in shining armor has come to the rescue of the damsel in distress.
America cannot afford to risk inexperience, says Bill Clinton. Bills message is loud and clear. Experience matters a lot and Obama just do not have what it takes to be ready for Commander-In-Chief.
When he is not telling a lie, the former President really makes a lot of sense. Nothing can be farther from the truth. Experience matters a great deal. I happen to agree with Bill Clinton this time. So in picking our next president, let us judge them on the basis of experience.
If we talk about experience in Congress, we got a lot of choices in Sen. John McCain, Sen. Fred Thompson, Rep. Duncan Hunter, Rep. Tom Tancredo, Rep. Ron Paul, Sen. Joe Biden, Sen.Christopher Dodd, Sen. Hillary Clinton, Sen. John Edwards and Sen. Barak Obama. In the Senate, McCain, Dodd, Thompson and Biden have each over twelve years experience compared to Clintons seven, Edwards six and Obamas two. Even Tancredo and Hunter had more years in Congress than Clinton, Edwards and Obama. Advantage, the rest of the field over Clinton, Edwards and Obama.
If we talk about executive management experience, we have good contenders in Rudy Guilliani, the 9/11 Mayor of New York, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney who also successfully managed the Olympics in Salt Lake City, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. Advantage, Guilliani, Romney, Richardson and Huckabee over the rest of the field.
Where does this put Clinton in the mix? She does not have executive experience nor does she have the longevity in the Senate that the other candidates have. She does not have the demonstrated heroism of McCain. She is not a crisis-tested leader like Guilliani. And she does not have the business and management acumen of a Romney. Gov. Bill Richardson has had to deal with the real problem of illegal immigration while Sen. Clinton can only talk from both sides of her mouth on the question of drivers licences for undocumented aliens.
Thats all right. At least she is an expert in domestic affairs, domestic relations that is.

The Washington Post (Dec. 9) reported that in September 2002, four ranking members of Congress were given a secret briefing by the CIA regarding harsh techniques interrogators had devised to try to make their prisoners talk, including water boarding. The bipartisan group included current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. None in the bipartisan group reportedly expressed any objection to the techniques disclosed.
Why so much ado now over what the CIA does to its captives to extract information that could save the lives of thousands of Americans?
September, 2002 was then proximate to 9/11 and the shock has not yet faded from peoples memory.
I am not one of those who think that feeding the bad guys with marshmallows would somehow soften their hearts and make them love us.
Can we afford to risk incalculable damage and injury to our people for the sake of being nice?
I do not condone inflicting physical pain on captives. That is my concept of torture. Beyond that, I would not want to tie the hands of those who are moving heaven and earth to protect my family and yours from harm.

Cheers for 2008!
