Considerably fewer left-wing activists have been killed this year in the Philippines thanks to international pressure on the government, a human rights group said Dec. 4.
So far this year, 68 activists have been slain and another 26 have disappeared compared with 185 killings and 93 disappearances last year, according to the left-wing group Karapatan, which has been documenting the abuses. The drop in killings can be attributed to pressure on President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo from the United States, the UN, the diplomatic community and local and international organizations, said Marie Hilao Enriquez, the head of Karapatan. Enriquez said 887 left-wing activists have been killed since 2001, and another 185 have disappeared.
