Kibitzers Corner by J.G. Azarcon Esq.By J.G. Azarcon Esq.
Filipinos just cant get over with the insult dished out by the Desperate Housewives sitcom produced by ABC insinuating that the professional competence of someone with a Philippine diploma is suspect.
After an initial torrent of outrage expressed by Filipinos, ABC apologized and agreed to delete the offensive line in future reruns. Representatives of Naffa, a national Fil-Am organization, were also able to wangle a commitment from the ABC producers to open up opportunities for Filipino talent on TV.

Sounds good, but not good enough to others. A group of Pinoy doctors meeting in Las Vegas wants more, including filing a class action suit. They even tell Naffa not to speak for them.

Although the character in the show was referring to a medical diploma, it was really a snipe at the value of Philippine education. No group of Philippine professionals can say that they alone have the moral authority to speak on the issue.
Naffas representations have served the interests of Filipino-Americans, artists in particular, who may now have a chance to break into the TV screen. You can beat a dead horse a thousand times but if nothing good comes out of it, whats the point? Naffas initiative is about turning an unfortunate incident into something positive for Filipinos, from insult to opportunity.

If others can squeeze more concessions from ABC, by all means bring it on. We never run out of ideas anyway, nor do we have a shortage of leaders. After all is said and done, can we really speak with one voice?

I met a self-employed entrepreneur who was doing fairly well in his business. He could easily afford to buy health insurance coverage for himself but opted not to. His explanation, I save more money by just paying the doctor when I get sick. But I seldom get sick, so I keep my money.

If the government mandates health insurance coverage as promised by candidate Hillary Clinton and others, people who could afford to provide health insurance coverage for themselves but chose to forego with it could end up with the longer end of the stick at the expense of the paying taxpayers. How is that fair?

At a time when there are serious questions about the solvency of Social Security and Medicare, the government just cannot afford another gigantic social program, unless you and I have to pay a lot more.

No news is good news. In the last few years, we have been bombarded with scenes of horrific carnage brought about by indiscriminate bombings that claimed the lives of civilians and soldiers alike. Lately, Iraq has been bumped off the front pages of newspapers and the TV evening news.

Although partisan politicians have prognosticated that the military surge would fail, bits and pieces of news coming out of Iraq seem to indicate a turnaround in the security situation. The fight will still be long and hard, but it looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel. A tough mission can only be accomplished by those who persevere.

Sen. Barack Obama told an audience of youngsters that he did drugs in his youth. I give him an A for honesty. I give him an F for giving kids the thought that you could mess up and still be a big shot notwithstanding. The problem is, not all kids are strong enough to save themselves from self-destruction. Honesty could hurt sometimes. Thats probably the reason God invented the white lie.
