Where’s Nicole’s rapist, Pinays ask
December 3, 2007
Women activists assisting Filipino rape victim Nicole have asked Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno to help facilitate their plan to inspect a detention center at the United States Embassy in Manila where Nicoles attacker has been detained since his conviction late 2006. In a November 14 letter, the Task Force Subic Rape reminded Puno of his stealthy transfer of Lance Corporal Daniel Smith from the Makati City jail to the US Embassy in December 2006.
At the height of the public furor over this subversion of Philippine sovereignty, your office announced that the [Department of the Interior and Local Government] would still function as Smiths jailer as its personnel could regularly check on Smiths continued stay in his jail inside the US Embassy,” the task force told Puno. It has been more than 10 months since that transfer. It has been more than six months since we learned of Smiths visit to a hospital. The Filipino people have the right to know whether he has not been spirited away, the task force said in a letter.
Task force leaders Yuen Abana of Partido Manggagawa, Corazon Requizo of KaisaKa and Esperanza Santos of Sarilaya signed the letter.
