Rizal Awardees Bag Natl Academic Honors

Thirty three Filipino American students received the 2007 Dr. Jose Rizal Youth Awards at ceremonies held at the Philippine Embassy on October 28th. In addition to receiving academic honors from their respective schools, the 2007 Rizal awardees also received national recognition from various organizations.

Ten students are members of the National Junior Honor Society or the National Honor Society - a national recognition program for middle school and high school students who show achievement in scholarship, leadership and character.

In addition to meeting a minimum cumulative grade point average, Honor Society members also have to fulfill a minimum number of hours of community service. The 2007 Dr. Jose Rizal awardees who are NHS/NJHS members are: Alyssa Dizon, Carl Joseph Miranda, Nikko Nolasco, Emilio Jose Esteban, Hannah Montero, Margarita Teresa Esteban, Anthony Venida, Amanda Dullin-Jones, Raymond Barbosa and Karen Lizza Ebbay.

Six students were recipients of the Presidents Award for Educational Excellence based on cumulative GPAs of 90% or better, high scores on state tests or nationally-normed achievement tests, and recommendations of their respective principals. Students chosen for this award received certificates and a letter of congratulations from President George Bush. Among the students who received this distinction are: Kevin Louis Argente, Kristine May Climaco, Marco de la Cuesta, Emilio Jose Esteban, Krizia-Ivana Udquim, and Adrianne Castro.

Siblings Mark and Michael Ramada received high honors from the Johns Hopkins University-Center for Talented Youth Mathematics and Verbal Talent Search while Michael Miranda received recognition for being a participant in the search. The Center for Talented Youth is a gifted education program. To qualify as an applicant in the national Mathematics and Verbal Talent Search, elementary and middle school students must have scored in the 95th percentile on an in-grade standardized tests. Applicants then take a standardized test that is above their grade level, beyond the ability of most children their age. The program is so stringent that a 7th graders test results are compared to the results for high school seniors. To qualify for any of the CTY programs, a 7th grader must score better than 50% of the high school seniors.
High school junior Amanda Dullin Jones distinguished herself by being a Commended Scholar in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Based on the results of the PSAT test taken by 1.4 million high school juniors in 2006, Amanda was one of only 50,000 students in the entire United States to receive this honor in the countrys most prestigious honors program for high school students.

Top high school graduates for school year 2006-07 Raymond Barbosa and Adrianne Castro both received AP Scholar with Honors from the College Board. The AP Scholar with Honor is bestowed upon students who received an average grade of at least 3.25 (on a 5 scale) on all advance placement courses (college courses taken while in high school) and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Raymond had five AP courses while Adrianne had seven. Both earned college scholarships. Adrianne is currently a BA General student with a full scholarship from the George Washington University while Raymond, currently a BA Honors student at Queens University (Ontario, Canada) received scholarship offers totaling over $60,000 from four universities.

Manuel Jose Maria Datiles graduated Summa cum Laude with a degree of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins University Kreiger School of Sciences. He also received the coveted golden key signifying membership in Phi Beta Kappa - the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the undergraduate liberal arts and sciences.

Rounding up the 2007 Dr. Jose Rizal Youth Awardees are: Gabrielle Alexis Abogadie, Joseph McHenry Chavez, Theodore Mendez, Alfred-Enberg Udquim, Faustinray Abogadie, Tricia Danielle Restum, Tatiana Lozano, William Mendez, Marco de la Cuesta, Kelvin Jens Moncera, Nicollette Fernandez, Kathleen Ferraren, Grace Anne Tatlonghari, Lawrence Franco, Patrick de la Torre, and Ramon Emmanuel Guevarra.
