LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles Times has been accused of being irresponsible and biased for portraying Chinese American immigrants involvement in politics in a story entitled An Unlikely Treasure-trove of Donors for Clinton.” It provoked outrage as well as racist sentiments from readers throughout the U.S., with its inaccurate and contrived description of fundraising among Fukienese-American laborers in New York Citys Chinatown community.

U.S. Rep. Mike Honda (CA - 15th District) said the article has a chilling effect on the civic participation of all Asian Americans. He stated, where I grew up, some people would call allegations without proof slander. And if such allegations are made solely because the community is Asian American, it begins to feel a lot like racism.

The article insulted Chung Seto, a well-known political operative and former press secretary for the U.S. Department of Labor, a former executive director for the state Democratic Party, and a campaign manager for mayoral candidate C. Virginia Fields, as merely a key figure helping to secure Asian support for Clinton who came to this country as a child from Canton province.
