WASHINGTON D.C. Although the Philippines practices freedom of religion, the United States government said discrimination against Muslims in this Catholic-dominant country persists.
In its International Religious Freedom Report of 2007, the US State Department Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor said there continues to be some ethnic, religious and cultural discrimination against members of the Muslim minority by members of the Christian majority in the Philippines.
The Philippines does not ban nor discourage specific religious groups or religious factions. But Muslims, who are concentrated in many of the most impoverished provinces of the country, have complained that the government has not made sufficient efforts to promote their economic development, the report said.
This, combined with economic disparities, contributed to persistent conflict in certain provinces (in the Philippines), it added. It noted that Muslims have long been suffering from discrimination by the larger Christian community in the country.
