Great news for the Filipino American tennis community especially those in the forefront of developing future champions from the ranks of the youth. Word has just reached the desk of FASTBREAK that a member of the elite RP squad that had the distinction of being the only Philippine team in the past to reach the Davis Cup Zone l Level of Tennis competitions (against Sweden) is now a resident of the Washington DC area. Danilo Gigi Pila, lives in Montgomery County, MD with is wife Ruby and is reportedly excited about helping our very young players to develop into world class tennis competitors.
Pila, actively participated in international play from 1987 to 1992 and one of his appearances was in the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing where he paired up with Diane Castillejo in the Mixed Doubles to reach the quarterfinals. They lost to the eventual champions from Indonesia. Diane now hosts a TV sports program in the ABS-CBN Network (Sports Unlimited). Some of Pilas co members were Felix Barrientos, Roland So, Camoy Palahang, Rod Rafael and Andres Battad.
With Joseph Lizardo a more recent RP tennis Olympian and now a resident of Baltimore, MD, and with Pila thrown in the mix local tennis buffs foresee a bright future for youth tennis development in the mold of Filipino Americans Cecile Mamiit and Eric Taino who have taken the Philippines back into Zone l Level of Davis Cup play.
Danny Francia, spokesperson of FATAM (Filipino American Tennis Association of Maryland ) who bore the brunt of tennis youth development before the formation of the FILAMTENNIS of Northern Virginia is expected to carry a heavy load in helping Pila get started. Luckily they live just a few minutes apart. With Ed Tiongs high-powered Virginia group things are indeed looking great.
Going Indoors. The onset of the cold months do not bother those who derive their health exercise in the great outdoors like recreational tennis. They will simply move indoors and get all the exercise they need without much trouble. In fact there are a lot of sports establishments dealing with this. In tennis for example, the SKYLINE SPORTS AND HEALTH CLUBS is offering a variety of activities, which include tennis lessons for all ages and skills level, tennis leagues and tournaments and for health buffs- how about Cardio Tennis. What is cardio tennis? To find out details of this new craze please call 703-403-5624- or visit Skyline Sports and Health Club at 5115 Leesburg Pike Falls Church VA. Want to know more about tennis as a form of recreational execise ? Read on.
Recreational tennis is great. Its beneficial effects in terms of health and even peace of mind are simply terrific One of the greatest aspects of tennis is that playing it can be fun. So true. True, it can be challenging, especially if youre just learning, but it also is a sport in which lessons, practice and persistence pay off quickly. And once you get the hang of it it becomes addictive.”.Tennis offers a great diversion from lifes stresses as well as a great opportunity to socialize, particularly if you join a local tennis league or club or frequent public courts. Tennis is definitely invigorating, and, once you get the hang of it, tremendously satisfying. Wow! It also makes for a great family activity. Tennis is not a sport played and enjoyed only by the young. In fact, 11.3 million adults aged 25 and up played tennis at least once last year. And as Venus and Serena Williams, and Maria Sharapova, Justin Henin and all those Russian and European women have so brilliantly reminded everyone, tennis is a sport for women just as much as it is for men.”
San Beda Pockets Another Back to Back Basketball Title. Typical of the old school basketball genre of cage fanatics in the Philippines, a gentleman from Burke. Virginia called again to extol the virtues of college basketball both in the UAAP and NCAA as a result of the recent championship games.
Renato Atong Martinez. now a consultant for several firms called from Manhattan NY to again point out that an article that appeared in a New Jersey Filipino newspaper mentioned that San Beda College won its second back to back title in NCAA history. Wrong says Martinez. It has now captured its third back to back title. Atong says the first back to back title won by San Beda was turned in by a crew led by the legendary Carlos Loyzaga in 1951 and in 1952 Eddie Lim and Tony Genato were two of the players. The second time San Beda won was in 1977 and 1978. One of the players here was Chito Loyzaga a son of the great Caloy. The others included JV Yango. Frankie Lim ( the 2007 coach) and the Guzman Brothers. And of course the 2006 and 2007 Red Lions. At the time when computers and the internet were but a dream. sports statistics were imbedded in the minds and hearts of the diehard fans. Martinez says he can memorize facts and figures up to the seventies and late eighties Anyway, congratulations to the Red Lions for winning the 2007 NCAA Mens Basketball championship and the De La Salle U Green Archers for capturing the UAAP Basketball crown.
