Councilor, wife die in ambush

DAVAO CITY A municipal councilor and his wife were killed in an ambush by motorcycle-riding gunmen along the national highway in the coastal town of Lebak in Sultan Kudarat Oct. 1 Sultan Kudarat Provincial Police Director Suharto Tocao identified the slain councilor as Dionisio Aguelo, who topped the council race in Lebak during the May 14 midterm elections. Also killed was the councilors wife, Elizabeth.
The two were onboard a motorcycle and were on their way home after visiting a village in Lebak at around 11 a.m. Sunday when hooded gunmen blocked their path and sprayed them with bullets.
Director Tocao believed the killing was politically-motivated.
Aguelo was known in Lebak to have strong political ties with Moro leaders in the area.
