Filam colonel assumes command of Puerto Rico Fort

FORT BUCHANAN, Puerto Rico - Col. Edwin Domingo, a Filipino American born in Sampaloc, Manila is the new commanding officer of Fort Buchanan in Puerto Rico. He replaced Col. Stephen M. Ackman at turnover ceremonies officiated by Maj. Gen. Alan D. Bell, Deputy Commander, United States Army Reserve Command, Deputy Chief, Army Reserve for Operations, Readiness, Training, and Mobilization.
Bell stressed the importance of Puerto Rico to the nation, saying it is a crucial symbol for the United States military because it has become the centerpiece of military presence in the Caribbean with some 4,000 army reserve warrior citizens assigned to the Fort.
Bell added: The Fort Buchanan community is diverse and sitting within the great city of San Juan serving 104,000 military and civilian personnel, veterans, retirees and their family members.”
Puerto Rico Senator Lucy Acre presented Domingo, with a Resolution of the Senate welcoming him to Puerto Rico.
The resolution read, To express congratulations of the Senate of Puerto Rico to Col. Edwin Domingo for his designation into office as current commander of Fort Buchanan Puerto Rico.”
Domingo, noting the importance of supporting island Soldiers who deploy in the Global War on Terror said, Our patriots are engaged on many fronts. Thousands of Puerto Rican Soldiers, National Guard and Reserve have been mobilized and more than 50 Puerto Ricans have made the supreme sacrifice in the struggle against those who would destroy the principles freedom, tolerance and liberty.”
It is a conflict that we will face for years to come. American history has shown time and time again that we are Soldiers going into harms way… to defeat a dangerous opponent and foe. To accomplish the requirement of being a power support platform, Fort Buchanan must heed the nations call and do our best to prepare our Soldiers and their families. We must have a credible and technical garrison operations to assist the Soldiers and their families. Fort Buchanan stands to support all Soldiers and families and to provide Americas best and ready force,” he continued.
Col. Domingo was born in Sampaloc, Manila in the Philippines. He immigrated to the US in the 70s and in 1982, he graduated from Saint Peters College in Jersey City, New Jersey with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and subsequently was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery.
He holds a Masters Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.
Col. Domingos past service has included assignments in the Republic of Korea; Fort Stewart, Georgia; Kirchgoens, Germany; Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Kuwait; Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico; Fort McPherson, Georgia and the Department of the Army, the Pentagon.
Col. Domingo is married to the former Rebecca Bacsa and they have four children.
