A different opinion

Sir:
Frankly I am not as sensitive to this issue as others are since this is just an irresponsible jab by the shows character. I understand that in other episodes they have made snide comments also as regards Arab cab drivers in NY, Iranian 7-11 workers, and even Catholic priests. I guess the only immigrant group exempted are the Mexicans because of Longaria.
In reality how many Pinoy doctors licensed in the Philippines who can not or will not practice here because they cannot pass the Board exams?
A very good friend of mine and a classmate form kindergarten had this To say and I quote: I know that the Pinoys in the healthcare business here in the US are very good at what they do and they have passed the government exams and have been licensed in the state where they work. My guess is that most if not all Pinoy doctors practicing in the US are graduates of US medical schools. The implication that doctors and nurses study medicine in the Philippines then get on a plane to the US and start working in hospitals making critical medical decisions shows how misinformed the script writer is about the US healthcare regulations and the US hospital hiring process then again, maybe that is what the character was supposed to portray their superficiality.
Anyway, this is how I would have argued this case instead of the emotional approach taken by the original email complainer. Rest assured, the average American does not stereotype Pinoy healthcare providers in the same vein.”
I wholeheatedly share in his opinion.

Clarification on CFC
Sir:
This is in response to your article, The Uncoupling of Couples for Christ” in your September 15 issue. Allow me to make the following inputs to put matters in its proper perspective.
- The founder of Couples for Christ, Frank Padilla, resigned from Couples for Christ Global Mission Foundation Inc. and formed his own community Couples for Christ Foundation for Family and Life Inc.
- As you accurately said ?Tension within the community rose as the growing over-emphasis by CFC on its Gawad Kalinga work which builds houses for the extremely poor people living in slum areas in the Philippines, caused the community to veer away from its primary work of evangelization.”
- CFCFFL also asserted that CFC Global has also veered away from pro-life principles that follow Catholic faith and morals. Padilla registered Couples for Christ, as a catholic lay association with the Vatican in 2000. It got its permanent recognition last.2005.
- Bishop Gabriel Reyes, chairman of the Episcopal Commission on the Laity of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, confirmed this when he quoted former CFC Global council member and GK director Antonio Melotos statement to the Philippines Daily Inquirer GK is non-partisan. We do not take any sides in building a nation in the same manner that we do not pass judgment on any corporation that we engage. We do not even ask them what their (corporations) products are as long as they want to help.” CFC Global director Joe Tale, however, committed to the bishops to look into the complaints.
- CFC Global and CFCFFL met in Manila last August 14 and agreed to separate in a brotherly and peaceful manner, with no reservation whatsoever to reunification in the future. The agreement was affirmed by CBCP Episcopal Commission last August 28.
- In the United States , Couples for Christ is present as Couples for Christ USA Inc. In order to insulate the local CFC from the conflicts in Manila , CFCUSA declared a status quo in effect not recognizing the new elections of CFC Global in Manila .
- This precipitated the walkout of its national director Joe Duran of Florida from the CFCUSA Council, who also eventually formed his own group loyal to CFC Global, with himself as as national director, Carl Sinsay of San Francisco, Norman Cenete of Chicago and Rod Bustos of Gaithersburg MD, as members. This group reports to CFC Canada national director Ricky Cuenca, as country coordinator.
- The present CFCUSA National Council is now composed of Nani Almanza of Seattle as new national director, and members Manny Hermano of Chicago, Ricky Coronel of Los Angeles, Jun Villamayor of Houston, Joe de Leon of New Jersey, Ado Paglinawan of Washington DC, and Edwin Andrews of Matrimonios para Cristos. Its country coordinator is still Frank Padilla.
- For Couples for Christ in Maryland , Virginia and Washington DC , Rod Bustos of CFC Global and I representing CFCFFL, met recently to support and implement the August 14 agreement of our principals for a brotherly and peaceful separation.*
- Besides the United States , Couples for Christ is now in more than 160 countries worldwide. Before the separation, the local Couples for Christ helped send my wife Margi and I to a mission opening CFC Cameroon in West Africa last November.

On Girl’s suicide linked to Phil. poverty
It is very pathetic for the country to experience this but I believe that the government should be partly to be blamed because this is a social issue. Also on the other hand, the govt. should not always be put to blame in the first place, citizens of the Philippines should not depend on the govt. all the time, we have to strive hard, control the number of children so we can control also our internal and external debts. Since we are a third world country, not all filipinos can always kill himself because of poverty, we have to help ourselves too. Teach ourselves how to fish.
