Filipino children are the ones who suffer the brunt of poverty and rapid population growth in the country, a recent situation analysis made by the United Nations International Childrens Fund (Unicef) revealed.
The Unicef, together with the national government, recently made a midterm review of the funds Country Program for Children 2005 to 2009, which included an assessment of the situation of children and women in the country. With roughly 1.7 million live births annually and over 43 percent of the population below 18 years, it can be surmised that the major brunt of poverty and population growth is felt by children and young people,” the review read. Though the countrys high economic growth has been robust, the most recent is the 20-year-high 7.5-percent gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter of the year, the study said poverty levels remain high ranging from 23 percent to 44 percent, depending on the source of the data.
