President Arroyo said the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) are close to forging a final peace agreement that would bring more foreign aid to Mindanao. But a statement issued by the MILF later said it will not agree to any government-imposed agreement. Mrs. Arroyo issued the statement after she held bilateral talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit last week in Sydney where the two leaders committed to ensure the success of the peace negotiations. Malaysia is brokering the four-year-old peace talks. We are close to a peace agreement with the MILF, thanks once again to the Bishops-Ulama Conference, Mrs. Arroyo said in her speech at the launching of the BUC Forum with the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police at Malacaang later. Last week, Mrs. Arroyo disclosed that the government would experiment on issuing certificates of ancestral domain to some Muslim communities in Mindanao even as it has yet to forge a final peace agreement with the MILF. She said the move may help resolve the deadlock in the talks. Among the thorny issues being resolved in the ongoing peace talks is the MILFs demand to expand to the current Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
@BULLET = Loren tops new
Sen. Loren Legarda topped the list of potential 2010 presidential candidates as shown in a survey conducted by Pulse Asia Inc., besting even Vice-President Noli de Castro and former president Joseph Estrada. Pulse Asia said the results of the survey showed that 26 percent of the respondents will vote for Legarda in 2010. Legarda was followed by Sen. Panfilo Lacson (16%), de Castro (15%), Senate President Manuel Villar (12%) and Sen. Francis Escudero (7%). Sen. Manuel Roxas II and Estrada, meanwhile, shared the second to the last slot, with six percent apiece.
President Arroyo was also on the list even though the Constitution bars her from seeking a fresh mandate. She shared the bottom position with Sen. Richard Gordon (3%).
