There is so much wastefulness in this country, Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales lamented as he hit rampant gambling at a joint membership meeting of the Bishops-Businessmens Conference at Dusit Hotel in Makati City recently. Im not talking only of illegal gambling like jueteng, there are the casinos, theres sabong, in every town you can see hectares of land with huts of cocks.
Rosales also ticked off three traits in the Filipino culture that can be used either for good or bad: The undefined way of belonging or pakikisama, a double-bladed way of cutting or belonging; an equivocal sense of gratitude or utang na loob that can be misused, and a frameless reliance or confidence and trust in God through the bahala na frame of mind.
