The Philippines, along with 15 other countries, will be under the glare of the spotlight when its human rights record is scrutinized by the United Nations next year. Bahrain, Ecuador and Tunisia will be the first UN members to have their human rights

records reviewed this February under an unprecedented and crucial process implemented by the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Sept. 30. The selection for the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) was made by a random draw on Friday. It lays out a timetable for the systematic review of all 192 UN member states by the end of 2011. Apart from the Philippines, the other countries due for review in the two-week session in February are Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Britain, the Czech Republic, Finland, India, Indonesia, Morocco, the Netherlands, Poland and South Africa.
